Here are the items I consider to be the best deals of the week and would buy. The grocery prices that I stock up on are in blue. I plan my meals around the best grocery deals, and shopping my own pantry and it saves us a LOT of grocery money each month. Hands down the best deal is on the ragu sauce & free pasta at Albertson's.
Any time I can get pasta for $0.80 a box (for a 1 lb. box) or less it's a good price to stock up, and so this works out fantastic!!! There is generally an 18 month best by date on spaghetti sauce & pasta (as basically dehydrated flour, etc.), really doesn't ever go bad. I don't can my pasta, and I don't buy spaghetti, I like to mix it up on the noodles and the kids love angel hair pasta.
You should try to get about 25 lbs. of pasta per person. I just always stock up on about 15 pounds each time there is a good sale and you'd be amazed at how quickly you'll reach your year's supply! But, only buy the Ragu/pasta deal if your family likes Ragu sauce (otherwise it's not a good deal for you, it's just wasted money & space storing it, there are always other good deals around the corner) .... happy shopping & Happy New Year!

Blog of the Week - The Prudent Homemaker -
Each week I would like to highlight a blog for you to read, look at and hopefully "glean" some information from. There are so many reasons to have our food storage, and in the end the biggest part is to become more self-sufficient!
The Prudent Homemaker (a highlighted blog on the left hand bar) is a woman who is in the middle of a difficult situation in Las Vegas with the economy there sputtering to a stand still for so many. I can not tell you how many times I have looked at this site for information, ideas for things to store and menu planning.
I am not going to say that any one person's ideas are the best with food storage, that's not the way it's outlined with the church manuals (a one size fits all method), but rather there are general guidelines and ideas placed there for us all to find out what works best for us.
Our food storage is not meant to be put under the beds and forgotten, it is to help us to become more self-sufficient and literally changes the way you live your life (for the better!) when you are working towards this goal.
